Signets are powers that are only access through the channeling between a dragon and bonded rider. They are a unique ability that stands out, the strongest skill that results from each unique bond between dragon and rider. Signets are the result of the unique chemistry between rider and dragon and usually say more about the rider than the dragon. The stronger the bond and the more powerful the dragon, the stronger the signet. Once a bond is created, riders can perform lesser magic with ease. If a signet isn’t manifested within the first 6 months of bonding, the magic consumes the rider and
Burning out occurs when the rider uses more signet power than their physical body can handle. Burn out usually results in death to the rider.
There is no signet capable of resurrection. See my theory on this.
With power comes corruption. Humans have the ability to defile the power channeled to them, and instead of channeling through dragons, they can channel straight from the earth. People that lean into this corruption are known as venin. The dragons help humans to avoid channeling too much power and becoming venin.
- Storm wielding: The caster has the ability to change the cloud coverage and weather. Violet’s mother has this signet.
- Size manipulation: The caster has the ability to shrink or enlarge the size of any item. Mira’s friend used their signet to shrink down Teine’s scales to fit Violet’s armored corset.
- Air manipulation: (See Emery, or page 198 of Fourth Wing)
- Fire wielding:
- Ice wielding:
- Water wielding:
- Shadow wielding: Shadow wielders are incredibly rare and useful in battle. (See Xaden Riorson). Depending on the strength of the signet, the shadows can hold and manipulate tangible objects.
- Contact inntinnsic: (See Dain Aetos) This signet is a classified signet. Wielders can read memories (in Dain’s case only recent memories) through physical contact.
- Mending: Brennan Sorrengail and Nolon are talented menders. Mending is considered to be one of the most rare and precious signets one can obtain. Menders have the power to fix, restore, or return anything to its original state, including broken bridges, ripped cloth and broken bones.
- Illusionists: Illusionists can project what they see in their mind. (See Professor Kaori)
- Siphoning: (See Naolin) Siphoning is the ability to absorb power from various sources (other dragons/riders) and then either use or distribute said power.
- Metallurgist: (See Sawyer) Riders with this ability can manipulate metals.
