Chapter 14 picks up in the middle of a tense conflict between Violet, Jack, Tynan and Oren. Violet shows us that she’s willing to risk her life for the feathertail that Jack wants to exterminate. Xaden interrupts the initial shit talking from the tree line. Xaden is showing time and time again that he’s on Violet’s side. Even Sgaeyl doesn’t seem pleased that Jack and his boys plan to kill the feathertail. Even though Xaden can’t interrupt or defend Violet, he makes a point to warn her when Oren is about to take a fatal blow against her. If Xaden really wanted her dead, why would he follow her during Threshing and help her succeed?
Despite Violet’s disadvantages, she holds her own pretty well against her three attackers. She’s able to find a weak spot in Jack’s shoulder with her dagger, sending him running away. She’s able to main Oren and focus on Tynan. When Tynan is killed by Tairn, everything changes for Violet. She’s now bonded to one of the most powerful dragons known. Not only is Tairn huge, but he’s skilled in battle. Their matching makes so much sense. Violet is intelligent and cunning, and so is Tairn. They have immediate chemistry and banter. The only downfall is well…the downfall. Violet is too weak to hold her seat, and the chapter leaves us on a cliffhanger. Dragons don’t usually accommodate, so if Tairn decides to save her he’ll be making two accommodations for her already due to her size.
