Fourth Wing: Chapter 13 Analysis

Chapter 13 is the chapter we’ve all been waiting for…almost. There’s a tender moment between Violet, Rhiannon and Ridoc. They all hug and wish each other luck. Meanwhile, their other squadmate, Tynan, is plotting Violet and the feathertail’s murder with Jack and Oren. This is the moment they’ve all been waiting for.

Violet is very connected with her inner emotions. She’s able to distinguish whether or not she feels guided in a certain direction, or whether she feels connected to a specific dragon. As much as she wants to bond, she doesn’t feel a connection with any of the bondable dragons. She is smart enough to get a good view, but her disability keeps her from doing it comfortably when she injures her ankle. Here’s where I get confused…why is Jack hunting the feathertail? Shouldn’t his biggest concern be bonding or even killing Violet first? It seems like a weird motive to kill a dragon that doesn’t have anything to do with you and can’t bond. Maybe he’s trying to prove to the other dragons that he’s willing to kill anyone or anything. Maybe he thinks it will make him more desirable. It seems like kind of a stretch in my opinion. I have another theory though. SPOILER!!! Was Jack venin at this point in the novel? Did he have plans to become one? This theory is also a stretch. Maybe he’s just sadistic. That would make the most sense.

Violet helping the feathertail proves that her compassion can be a strength. This decision isn’t surprising to me. What’s surprising is Xaden. Was Xaden watching her the whole time? Was he keeping an eye on her or protecting her? Maybe he just wanted to protect the feathertail. Either way, Jack and his boys are fucked if Sgaeyl decides to step in. Violet’s courage in this chapter is admirable. She’s willing to die to protect a dragon that she isn’t bonded to.
