Riders at Basgiath are expected to wear black, but it must be earned.
- The Riders Quadrant is known for their black uniforms. Flight leathers are only given to riders after they’ve bonded at Threshing.
- Flight leathers are thicker and more protective than the typical uniforms. They are only given to riders, not cadets. Flight leathers come with a full button-down jacket. Flight leathers bear no insignia besides rank and leadership designation on the shoulder. They don’t have names or patches, so the rider can remain anonymous if stuck in a bad situation.
- In chapter 1 of Fourth Wing, Mira gives Violet a pair of rubber-bottomed riding boots to help her grip on the parapet. Violet ends up giving a shoe to Rhiannon, which ends up sparking a friendship between the two.
- Along with the boots, Mira gives Violet leather pants with dagger sheaths sewn into the thigh area, a tight-fitting black shirt and a vest-style corset armored with her dragon, Teine’s, scales. Along the rib cage are multiple hidden dagger sheaths sewn diagonally. Mira had a friend with a size changing signet shrink down Teine’s scales in order to fit them onto the corset. This corset isn’t regulation but is easily hidden under Violet’s regular clothing.
- Regalia (pins/patches/medals) High ranking riders may have medals on their uniforms to show various accomplishments. Stars on the uniforms show the riders year. (Second-years would have 2 stars.) Each wing has a designated patch as well.
- If a rider is wearing a compass patch under their wing patch, it means their signet is classified and cannot be shared.
- Sections have patches as well. Professor Devera’s patch for Flame Section is bright purple.
- In chapter 11 of Fourth Wing, we see Heaton has a patch on their upper right arm with water and floating spheres, but Violet doesn’t know the meaning yet.
- A triangular patch with a longsword means that the wearer is talented in the area of combat/sparring.
- Cadets may receive a Gauntlet patch for having the fastest time on Presentation Day. Liam Mairi won this Violet’s first year.
- Quinn has a dark-green patch with two silhouettes that Violet doesn’t know the meaning behind.
- Violet has a flame-shaped patch with the emblem for Fourth wing, and the centered, reddish number two. This portrays her wing, section and squad.
- Violet’s favorite patch is her Iron Squad patch that her squad won for having the most surviving members since Parapet.
- Gauntlets: Armored gloves made of metal (where the Gauntlet obstacle got its name)
