Fourth Wing: Chapter 6 Summary

Chapter 6 gives readers a closer insight to the Healer Quadrant. Dain is carrying Violet to the infirmary after Imogen broke her shoulder. When they arrive, Violet runs into some old family friends–Winifred and Nolon. The married couple hold high regards as talented healers at Basgiath, and have been healing Violet most of her life. Nolon is technically a mender, which means that he has a signet that can heal anything that’s broken, even toppled bridges.

Tension arises between Dain and Violet once again when Dain makes it clear he wants Violet to heal naturally, without being mended by Nolon, because she still has a chance to join the Scribe Quadrant. Even though Violet is high off of the healing serum that Winifred gave her, she refuses to let Dain convince her and Nolon that she needs to become a scribe instead of a rider. Nolon shoos out Dain when it’s time to mend Violet’s shoulder. Mending puts the bones back together, but doesn’t heal the wound entirely. Violet knows she’ll be sore for two weeks, and in two weeks they are going to start their on-mat challenges.

When she wakes up from the mending, she speaks to Rhiannon about her condition and worries. As she’s speaking, she notices something under her pillow. It turns out to be a note from Mira. She bribed a scribe to slip it under Violet’s pillow. Along with the note is a book. Mira explains in the note that Brennan, their older brother, wrote this book to give advice and secret information about each challenge that Mira would face during her first year in the Riders Quadrant. The book is called The Book of Brennan, and in the first few pages he gives advice on how to figure out who you are going to spar with the following day. This is vital to Violet’s success, because the ability to prepare for a specific opponent will make up for her lack of physical strength.
