This chapter begins with Violet free falling off of Tairn. She truly believes she’s going to die. Fortunately, Tairn catches her before she can fall to her death. He scolds her for making them look bad to the other dragons. Nearby she sees a rider fall to their death from their dragon, realizing that should’ve been her. Tairn uses his powers to keep Violet’s legs and arms gripped in place, which is another rare occurrence for a dragon.
Violet asks Tairn why he chose her to bond with. Tairn tells her it is because she was courageous enough to risk her life to save the gold feathertail. He also commends her for being the most intelligent student in her year. They begin descending to the flight field, where they are the 71st bond to enter the fields. Tairn informs Violet that he can read her thoughts, which is unexpected to her since talking about dragon bonds is considered taboo. Violet dismounts Tairn to go share his whole name with the roll-keeper. Violet suggests to the feathertail that she should fly away next time she’s in danger. The feathertail replies that she was actually saving Violet. Violet acknowledges that she shouldn’t talk to riders when they aren’t bonded.
On the flight field, Violet spots her mom, who doesn’t seem to believe she actually bonded Tairn. Violet once again feels like she isn’t good enough to reach her mom’s expectations, and resolves to a sense of indignance. She shares Tairn’s full name with the roll-keeper, and then the feathertail chimes in with her full name as well: Andarnaurram. Andarna for short. Violet is torn because riders aren’t allowed to bond two dragons typically, but dragons ultimately make the rules. Violet adds Andarna’s name to the roll, and chaos breaks loose.
